Many go unnoticed during the original home inspection when the home was purchased. At first glance, everything appeared to be proper with this beam. Only a light prodding revealed serious damage. A number of beams all showed the same damage. The repair in this case was quick and not intrusive. However, had this condition not been called to attention, the beams could have collapsed and caused the floor and the structure to drop.
